6 corrections officers charged with lying about beating of inmate are indicted

Six corrections officers – including a sergeant – have been indicted on official misconduct and other charges more than four years after two allegedly beat an inmate at a youth correctional facility and all lied about it.
All six were also indicted on charges of tampering with public records and falsifying records, the state Office of the Attorney General said Wednesday.
Two – Sgt. Michael Emmert, 40, of Toms River and senior corrections officer Christopher Toth, 40, of New Egypt – were also indicted after being charged in May 2022 with aggravated assault.
The charges stem from an April 8, 2020, incident at the Garden State Youth Correctional Facility in Chesterfield. Shortly after midnight, six DOC officers assigned to the youth prison participated in a forced cell extraction and later filed false reports that claimed the use of force was justified, authorities said.
Emmert allegedly sprayed an inmate with pepper spray “without giving the victim any opportunity to comply, and despite the victim offering to be handcuffed,” according to prosecutors.
The victim screamed in pain and had to be given an inhaler and oxygen in the infirmary, authorities said.
Attorneys for Emmert and Toth didn’t immediately return phone calls from NJ Advance Media on Wednesday.
Also indicted are the following senior corrections officers:
• Mark Sadlowski Jr., 46, of Sewell
• Raymond Quinones, 50, of Beachwood
• Michael Gaines, 58, of Willingboro
• Michael Ambrozaitis, 60, of Southampton
On Tuesday, two Juvenile Justice Commission senior corrections officers were charged with sexually assaulting an 18-year-old woman being held at a state facility in Burlington County.
